Black Poppy Seed Pod Earrings – Blackened Copper

A pair of handcrafted poppy seed pod earrings made from copper, pewter and steel. Each elongated openwork composition features two sculptural poppy pods growing from fine intersecting stems.

The rounded pods resemble mature poppy seed capsules rather than open flowers. Each one is individually shaped and finished with a small textured crown formed from tiny metal spheres.

Two pods rise at different heights in each earring. Their softly irregular shapes and slightly different proportions preserve the natural character of the handmade design.

Long slender stems curve downward and cross one another near the center. Their flowing lines create movement while keeping the earrings visually delicate.

In the lower section, the stems form an elongated open loop resembling a narrow leaf or seed husk. This airy detail gives the composition additional depth without adding visual weight.

Two fine endings extend beneath the loop and finish in smooth rounded metal droplets. They move gently with the earrings and complete the long botanical silhouette.

The earrings form a coordinated, oppositely directed pair. They share the same elements and visual rhythm, but the curves and placement of the pods are intentionally reversed rather than mechanically identical.

The deep black finish emphasizes the rounded seed pods, delicate stems and small textured details. Depending on the lighting, the metal may appear matte black, dark graphite or softly metallic.

There is no glass, stone or ceramic in this design. Its character comes entirely from the contrast between the sculptural pewter pods and the fine black metal lines.

Despite their expressive length, the open construction keeps the earrings visually light. They can be worn as botanical jewelry, dark floral earrings or small pieces of sculptural wearable art.

The version shown in the photographs has two poppy seed pods in each earring and a black finish. A custom earring size or a silver-tone finish may be requested through personalization.

These earrings are designed as small wearable botanical objects, somewhere between jewelry, natural memories and personal symbols. Each component is shaped and finished by hand in my family workshop on the Baltic coast of Poland.

The design begins with impressions of dried poppy capsules, slender stems and the quiet graphic shapes left in a garden after flowering. I do not reproduce nature literally. I allow these observations to guide the material until a new form appears.

I do not usually begin with a finished sketch. The work grows intuitively during the making process — through the dialogue between hands, materials and feeling.

The photographs show two poppy seed pods and a closed lever-back clasp on each earring rather than three pods and open ear wires.

The metal is covered with black patina, carefully sanded and polished, then treated with an antioxidant finishing solution to help protect the surface and preserve its deep tone.

Because every poppy pod, textured crown, curved stem and rounded ending is shaped and assembled by hand, small differences in the curves, proportions and finish are natural and make each pair individual.
